  • Selecting a Rod and Reel Combo for Saltwater Fishing

Choosing the right saltwater rod and reel combo is a huge part of preparing for your next fishing expedition. First, you'll need to be clear on the type of fishing you want to do, the species of fish you'll be targeting, and the environment you intend to fish in. For large saltwater fish, you'll need 7-8 foot rods with a heavy or medium action. You may also want a graphite or composite rod if you are a more experienced angler. Many saltwater species are also quite aggressive: if you'll be targeting large species like mutton snappers, big tarpon, or sharks, you'll need at least 50 pounds of drag for the reel. If you aren't setting your sights quite so high, you can do with a shorter rod with less drag. A rod and reel combo helps you be confident that your gear will be well-balanced. At Sportsman's Warehouse, you can shop our wide selection of quality products from trusted manufacturers including Abu Garcia, Okuma, and Penn.
