Choosing a Baitcasting Fishing Reel
Casting reels (also known as baitcasting reels) have a revolving spool and sits on top of the casting rod, unlike the spinning reel that is located below the rod. Choose between a round casting reel for heavier line, or a low-profile reel for palming and easier wrist-action. You'll also need to choose the right gear ratio for your casting reel, which refers to how many revolutions the spool will make for each time you turn the reel handle. The most common gear ratio is 6.4:1, but you can get higher (with a higher first number) or lower (with a lower first number) depending on the type of fishing you'll be doing. You'll also choose between centrifugal brakes operated by pins, or magnetic brakes that rely on the spool and magnet.
