**The UL 30-50 shafts are also available for use in this spine selection, depending on the shaft selection and your setup.
These are based on a 100 gr. point. If using a 125 gr. point or more, you may need to use a stiffer spine. If using an 85 gr. point or less you may need to use a weaker spine.

Arrow Selection Tips and Considerations

The following are general guidelines, recommendations and considerations for arrow and arrow spine selection.

Draw Weight

Draw weight is the first variable you want to consider when making your arrow selection. Generally, as draw weight increases, arrow rigidity (spine) should also increase. As a rule of thumb, use an arrow with a minimum of 5 grains of weight per pound of draw weight. For example, if you're using a compound bow with 70 pound draw weight, then you should use a minimum 350 grain arrow—including the weight of your field point or broadhead.

Draw Length

Draw length is another important factor when selecting an arrow. The arrows you select are typically longer than your draw length. If your arrow is too short it can fall of the arrow rest and cause injury. Arrows should be about 1 to 2 inches longer than draw length. For beginning archers, the longer arrow length is recommended.

Arrow Length

Due to the growing popularity of drop-away arrow rests mounted to the rear of the riser, arrows may not necessarily need to be proportionate to draw length as described in the preceding section. As such, it's important to recognize that a shorter arrow with a specific arrow spine will be more rigid than a longer arrow with the same spine. When selecting arrow rigidity you need to account for arrow length. For example, a 70 pound bow with a 24" arrow, will require a more flexible shaft than a 70 pound bow using a 28" arrow.

Point Weight

Point design and weight is a big consideration for most bowhunters. Point weight in particular can boost an arrow's penetrating power. However, point weight also impacts spine performance. Using an extra-heavy point, or adding a point insert, can have a negative impact on spine rigidity and cause an arrow to fly erratically. A relatively stronger spine is typically required for heavier points in order to maintain correct arrow ballistics. For example, a 28" arrow with a 100-grain point shot from a 70 pound bow may require a 400 spine. However, the same length arrow shot from the same weight bow may require a 340 spine when point weight is increased to 150 grains.
