Henry Mare's Leg Lever Action Pistol

Henry Mare's Leg Lever-Action Pistol

It’s called a pistol, but the action is built on the established engineering tradition perfected by Henry Arms in their high-quality brass plated decorative lever-action rifles. The name “Mare’s Leg” comes from its resemblance to the curve in a horse’s rear leg.

Rifle or pistol, the name doesn’t matter nearly as much as the action it offers. A very short stock, short barrel with a full action .22 long rifle or .45 long Colt cartridge.

Henry has added .22 magnum, .44 magnum, and .357 magnum calibers to the Mare’s Leg lineup, creating five different cartridges to choose from.

Henry brought back the gun that made Steve McQueen famous in his only regular western television series, “Wanted Dead or Alive” The original model was a sawed-off lever-action .30-30.

The .45 Colt version is a modified Henry Model H006C “Big Boy .45 Colt,” the .22 long rifle, which can also chamber .22 shorts and .22 longs, is built on the H001 Henry.

The barrel and walnut stock are reduced to the same measurements as the gun Steve McQueen used in each weekly episode to get the jump on the bad guys he was chasing.

The Mare’s Leg offers the same easy-loading, tubular magazine that all Henry lever-action rifles use.

Henry Mare’s Leg Lever-action Repeating Pistol .22 Long Rifle

The phrase used in the Civil War to describe the first lever-action repeating rifles was “Load it on Sunday, shoot all week.” You might not shoot quite that long, but with a magazine that holds 10 long rifle, or 16 shorts, the .22 version of the Mare’s Leg has an ample supply of ammo for target shooting or small game hunting.

The gun is surprisingly accurate for a barrel length of just under 13 inches, thanks to a 1:16 twist. All the quality you’ve come to expect in a Henry rifle is here in this iconic Hollywood creation.

Henry Mare’s Leg Lever-action Repeating Pistol .22 Magnum

For those wanting a touch more energy, a little better range, and greater accuracy over distance, while keeping ammunition costs down, the .22 magnum is a nice upgrade from the standard .22 long rifle. The bullets are similar in size, but the difference comes in the longer shell casing of the .22 magnum which packs more powder, resulting in higher energy.

It should be noted that the cartridges are not interchangeable, so keep your .22 long rifles with the .22 version of the Mare’s Leg and the .22 magnum rounds where they belong.

Henry Mare’s Leg Lever-action Repeating Pistol .45 Long Colt

The .45 Long Colt is the cartridge of the Old West, though most of them were fired initially in clouds of heavy black smoke. The arrival of smokeless powder changed that, as did the advent of more powerful rounds like the .30-06 at the turn of the 20th century, but the .45 Long Colt will always hold a spot in the hearts of western history enthusiasts.

It’s the caliber Josh Randall fired in Wanted Dead or Alive and it was the first produced Mare’s Leg by Henry.

With a tubular magazine that loads through the stock, a shorter stock as is the case with the Mare’s Leg holds fewer rounds. The .45 version of this pistol has a five-round magazine. Five might seem a little inadequate in today’s world of huge magazines emptied at the flick of a finger, but five rounds of .45 Colt ammunition is more than enough for big game hunting. The 1:16 twist augments the shorter barrel of the Mare’s Leg making it surprisingly accurate to distances of 200 yards.

Henry Mare’s Leg Lever-action Pistol .44 Magnum

At first sight, you’d be hard pressed to tell any difference between the .45 Long Colt and the .44 Magnum versions of the Mare’s Leg. The weight, overall length, and barrel length are all identical as is the magazine capacity and even the appearance of the same length, blued, octagonal barrel.

The difference is apparent once you fire it with the loud report of the .44 magnum much different than the sound of the .45 Long Colt. The other appreciable difference is the twist. The .45 Long Colt sports a 1:16 while the .44 magnum has a much higher twist of 1:20. The higher twist means greater accuracy coming out of the muzzle and helps compensate for the pistol cartridge this hybrid lever-action rifle/handgun fires.

You’ll notice a good kick from either of the larger cartridges but the sound of the muzzle blast will the magnum away.

Henry Mare’s Leg Lever-action Pistol .357 Magnum/.38 Special

A lever-action pistol that can chamber the powerful.357 Magnum cartridge along with the less expensive, less powerful .38 Special round makes an interesting combination of rifle and pistol all rolled into one.

The .357 Magnum is a very powerful pistol cartridge and when chambered in a longer 12.904-inch barrel with the heavier construction of a lever-action rifle it is a good round for short to mid-distance hunting or target shooting.

The .38 Special has lower ballistic numbers, but it also comes at a much lower price. When ammunition is at a premium, and costs continue to rise, the lower .38 Special cartridge is a great choice for target shooting.
