Our Story
In 1889, Hamilton Carhartt started his clothing company with a simple mission. He wanted to serve the railroad workers of Michigan by offering high-quality, purpose-built overalls that could stand up to the rigors of their tough jobs. Hamilton Carhartt & Company began with a few pieces of denim fabric, two sewing machines, and a half-horsepower electric motor in a small Detroit loft. By the 1920s, the company had facilities all over the US and Canada, and even in Europe. Carhartt and its “Master Cloth” were firmly entrenched in the minds of workers everywhere.
As the 20th century progressed, Carhartt’s product line expanded. The company that was always known for its heavy-duty denim and brown duck outerwear soon became a leader in sweatshirts, T-shirts, and possibly the most iconic watch hat ever created. In the new millennium, Carhartt has looked to evolve its classic designs with new fabrics, fits, and technologies. With every development, the company still thinks about its customers the same way: “I would be a traitor to this vast army of world builders did I not give them the best that is in me.” - Hamilton Carhartt, 1925.
