A crossbow is ideal for short range shooting with a maximum effective range of 50-60 yards. For hunting game, the effective range of a crossbow is between 20 and 40 yards. The most significant factor affecting shooting range is the power of the crossbow. More powerful models can shoot accurately up to 100 yards. However, shooting at any distance beyond 60 yards requires more skill and practice.
The minimum legal draw weight for hunting medium to big game is typically between 150 to 175 pounds. High-powered crossbows with a draw weight above 200 pounds are suitable for hunting larger game including elk, moose and bear. Compound crossbows with pulley systems shoot faster and more accurately than recurve crossbows, and are the best option for hunting game animals.
