Smith & Wesson Model S&W 500 Revolver

Smith & Wesson Model S&W 500 Revolver

Massive, that’s about the only way you can describe the power of the .500 Smith and Wesson Magnum. The 500-grain bullet is the largest standard caliber of handgun ammunition on the market. Tipping the scales in excess of an ounce, the 500-grain bulled of the 500 magnum Smith and Wesson delivers energy with 100 yards that rivals the larger big game rifle calibers. This is a powerful handgun, designed by the engineers at Smith and Wesson back in 2003 to deliver the maximum power you could find in a handgun.

The 500 magnum is popular with handgun hunters, and even more popular as a backup weapon if things go wrong on a big game hunt for Alaskan brown bears, or dangerous African animals while on safari.

To handle the extreme power of a 500-grain bullet in the 500 magnum, Smith and Wesson engineers came up with a unique frame for the revolver. Calling it an “X-frame” this style, combined with a pair of muzzle compensators allows a shooter to handle the tremendous recoil of the revolver while keeping aim on the target.

There isn’t anything on the market to compare with the energy this handgun can develop, and even custom-designed revolvers have difficulty matching the power.

The compensators are designed to work with either standard lead bullets or accommodate jacketed bullet ammunition.

The revolver comes in three models and also chambers 300-grain .500 Magnum cartridges. The muzzle energy of this powerful handgun has been measured at 2600-foot pounds.

Smith and Wesson .500 Magnum 4” Revolver

Smith and Wesson .500 Magnum 4 inch revolver

With a barrel length of just four inches, this will be a noisy firearm on the range. The power and force of a .500 Magnum is something many people don’t ever want to feel in a handgun. With a satin stainless steel finish, and black, rubber-style synthetic grips this is an impressive firearm to view with its immense size, and even more, intimidating once you pull the trigger.

Because of the large diameter of .500 magnum cartridges, there is only enough room for five chambers in the high-strength, stainless steel cylinder.

Compliant to Colorado and New York standards, this is the most powerful, intimidating revolver in the world. It far outshines the power and overall energy of a .44 magnum.

Smith and Wesson .500 Magnum 8.38 Inch Revolver

Smith and Wesson .500 Magnum 8.38 Inch Revolver

The size is the first thing you’ll notice about the Smith and Wesson .500 Magnum with the longer 8.34-inch barrel. Available in two slightly different versions it tips the scales at over four-and-a-half pounds, a large handgun by any standard.

The differences between the two models are the sights, one arrives with the Hi-VIZ Red Dot front and rear adjustable sight, and the other with an interchangeable front sight, but the same adjustable rear sight. The weight difference isn’t that much, with the interchangeable sight system weighing 71.9 ounces, and the Red Dot slightly more at 72.5 ounce.

This is a very large, very powerful handgun. Even with the compensators, it has a substantial recoil, something you should be prepared for prior to purchasing this revolver. With the power to easily drop the largest game animal at ranges to 100-yards, and just as easily penetrate the largest engine block of any vehicle with this high-powered workhorse of a revolver.
