Taylors & Company 1873 Cattleman Revolvers
(10)Taylor's & Company 1873 Cattleman 357 Magnum 4.75in Color Case Hardened Steel Revolver - 6 Rounds
“Keeping the Legend Alive” has been the Taylors and Company 1873 motto since they began operations in 1988. If you’re a fan of the Old West they have a time period replica waiting for you. The Cattleman is one of their most popular reproductions based on the 1873 Colt Peacemaker, “The Gun That Won the West.”
Taylors and Company 1873 honored the original .45 Long Colt cartridge though you won’t have the clouds of smoke from the black powder days with this revolver. They added more modern calibers as well with versions of the Cattleman chambering .357 and .44 Magnum.
The Cattleman is a single-action revolver. This is a nice safety feature that will take a modern gun owner a little time to adjust to. The hammer must be pulled back each time to cock the gun before the trigger can be fired. If you’ve watched the old westerns, you’ve seen gun fighters’ “fan” their revolvers with a quick swat of their left hand with the trigger depressed. It makes for great cinema but not great accuracy.
This single action revolver is produced in three barrel lengths, 4.75, 5.5 and 6-inches. The finish, grips and ornamentation separate the various versions but each one has commonality in design, action and function. They are all forge framed, meaning they have better steel grain structure, are stronger and will be more durable. You’ll have a piece of history that will stand the test of time.
All of these models are six-shooters as they were in the Old West. They are heavy revolvers, averaging around two-and-a-half pounds. The longest, with the six-inch barrel is 11.5-inches and shortest, with the 4.75-inch barrel is still a good size handgun at 10.35-inches long.
They feature a fixed V-notch rear sight aligning with the front sight. Similarities end between the various models when it comes to ornamentation. You can purchase a Cattleman with a floral design, with a coin embossed in the grip, smooth grips, checkered grips, and with blued or stainless-steel barrels. The variety is impressive and will catch the eye of any fan of old-style six-shooting revolvers.
These are popular pistols on the Cowboy Action Shooting circuit. A professional can fan these revolvers so quickly that you think they’ve only fired a single shot when they’ve emptied the gun with six rapid spins of the cylinder. For action shooting, you can’t beat the authentic look of these handguns.
For target shooting they’re accurate, reliable and safe. They’re a great way to start a youngster or novice on the principles of handgun safety. The Cattleman is simply a fun firearm to take out to the range, but they’re accurate enough for small game hunting, or even big game in the .44 Magnum versions. They’re also a great self-defense weapon. The “Gun That Won the West” is still winning.
