Modular design, that’s the first feature many knowledgeable gun owners notice with the Sig Sauer P320. The modularity allows a lot of customization. You can change grip frames, barrel lengths, slide assemblies and create a unique combination that perfectly matches your requirements.
The P320 was introduced in 2014 and quickly gained acclaim as the U.S. Army selected a modified P320 as its new standard sidearm, calling it the M17 for the full-side and the M18 for the compact version. It has a growing popularity with law enforcement as well, particularly park rangers, back country rangers and game and fish personnel.
The durability of the P320 is superb. It can handle dirt, gravel, dust, sand, water and chemical exposure and keep on firing. The P320 is a descendent of Sig Sauer’s earlier P250, which was also a modular design. The modular design can be personalized by the owner but allows Sig Sauer to create over a dozen unique versions of this popular pistol.
Offered in 9mm, 10mm and .45 ACP the P320 has a caliber for just about everyone. The P320 is a heavier pistol in the full-sized version, starting at two pounds empty and going up from there. With a full 15-round magazine of 10mm you can add another 13 ounces and with a full magazine of .45 ACP it weighs another nine ounces.
Sig Sauer markets a whopping 15 versions of the P320, most full-sized but some compact. Each features a 10 or 15-round magazine, a barrel length of 4.6 to 5 inches in the full-sized model and 3.9 inches in the compact.
The original P320 had issues with accidental discharge with a round in the chamber if it was dropped on a hard surface. Sig Sauer did a complete recall, updating pistols already produced at their expense and redesigned their new models to eliminate this problem. That’s why the U.S. Army continues to use the P320.
