These are single action, “Old West” style six-shooters with all the style and character you may have grown up on while watching westerns on TV and in the movies. They’re priced inexpensively as well. A single-action revolver means you must pull the hammer back manually before each shot. This is an added safety feature since the revolver can’t be fired no matter how hard you pull the trigger until the hammer is pulled back into the firing position.

A blued barrel, lightweight aluminum frame, Cocobolo grip panels and a hammer block safety are shared features among all the 68 different models. This is a bit of nostalgia wrapped inside a modern, high-quality handgun.

Single action revolvers can be fired rapidly if you learn to “fan” the hammer, meaning holding down the trigger while striking the hammer with your opposite hand. It’s fast, but not particularly accurate to shoot this way.

Thankfully, the Rough Rider in the longer barrel versions is a solid, good distance handgun with 22. Long Rifle cartridges. A longer barrel increases accuracy, but it comes with less control when firing off hand. From a bench rest, or when holding the revolver with both hands and a good stance, the Rough Rider is accurate at 50 yards, optimal handgun distance.

When firing at smaller targets, from 15 yards or closer, any of the 68 different versions of the Rough Rider will produce good scores. Rimfire, .22 Long Rifle cartridges have almost no recoil. They’re a great caliber for beginners, and anyone who doesn’t like the heavier recoil that larger calibers can produce. For plinking, varmint hunting and even home defense, the reliability and accuracy of the Rough Rider is a plus.
