Balance is the key in any caliber. Balanced power, balanced platform and balanced delivery. That balance gives the 9mm an advantage over other handgun calibers. In power, it delivers more energy than a .32 or .38, and in magazine volume it exceeds the larger 10mm and .45 ACP.
When it was first introduced the 9mm was considered underpowered and insufficient as a self defense or military caliber. Innovations in bulled design led to modern ammunition which is much more effective.
Cost is another consideration, 9mm ammunition is inexpensive and widely available. It’s a great caliber for the range and training. The lighter recoil, less expensive ammunition and similar range to .45 ACP or even .357 Magnum make it a great choice.
9mm pistols were the standard for home defense, law enforcement and military use for decades. They’ve been challenged by 10mm pistols but remain the dominant caliber.
Variability in the size of a 9mm handgun allows it to be a cartridge anyone can use successfully. They can be light, easily concealed or larger, easier to hold, more accurate and with less recoil.
Police officers use 9mm because city budgets can afford the lower cost ammunition. They have large magazines, making them a good choice in a firefight. Civilians use 9mm for the same reasons and because they are a viable competition caliber in shooting contests.
There isn’t much recoil on a 9mm unless you’re shooting a micro-compact. In a standard or compact pistol, the recoil is negligible as compared to a .40 Cal or .45 ACP. This makes them a great choice for beginners and smaller shooters.
Lower recoil allows the shooter to remain in control and on target. Less rise after each shot keeps the pattern tight and that can make the difference in a self-defense situation.
