SIG Sauer P365

SIG Sauer P365

Bigger isn’t always better, especially in the world of concealed carry handguns. The Sig Sauer P365 has an excellent reputation with law enforcement, as a personal defense weapon, and with military usage in situations that require a smaller, lighter pistol.

Sig Sauer markets the P365 as a “Micro-compact pistol,” designed for everyday concealed carry. With a polymer frame, stainless steel slide assembly, and an ample magazine, the smaller P365 is a top choice in the concealed carry world.

Add to the small design, the power of a 9mm cartridge, and you’re on par with most assailants you may encounter.

The smaller footprint of the pistol makes it an ideal choice for women, or men with smaller hands, creating a powerful firing platform in a much easier to hold, track and fire frame. Along with the physical attributes of this pistol, the variety that Sig Sauer has placed in their extensive line of P365 pistols is staggering.

The Sig Sauer website lists a dozen various versions of their popular pistol in calibers from .177 air rifle, to .380 and 9mm. An intriguing pistol is the inexpensive P365 CO2 .177 offering. The size, heft, and action of the pistol is nearly identical to centerfire models making it a great, inexpensive training tool, or a good starter pistol for a novice shooter.

If a dozen models aren’t enough choice for you, Sig Sauer offers a “build your own” option that allows you to add or remove features to create a P365 that is uniquely your design.

Let’s look at what it brings to the table.

SIG Sauer P365 Standard Features:

  • Striker fired, semi-automatic
  • Optional external safety (model dependent)
  • Optics ready (model dependent)
  • Adjustable sights
  • Better capacity
  • Multiple caliber options
  • +P rated (9mm only)
  • Proprietary accessory rail
  • Polymer frame

The P365 is a striker fired, polymer handgun. This brings in line with modern standards for concealed carry. It features a double stack magazine that provides a minimum of 10+1 rounds in the gun but other magazine and size options increase this to 12+1 or 15+1 depending on the model and extension sleeve used.

Most models will feature internal safeties without any external options following the popularity of Glock’s design, but there are some manual safety models for those who need the extra reassurance of a manual safety.

The grips of the P365 feature an aggressive texture to help ensure a good grip on the pistol even in wet or other adverse conditions. There are also multiple sizes of P365. These are the P365 Micro-Compact, the P365 X, and the P365 XL.

The P365 also comes in two chamberings. Most models are chambered in 9x19 mm while the P365-380 is chambered in .380 ACP for those who want a lighter recoil than 9mm.

There are optics ready versions of the P365, these allow you to mount a red dot on the gun and some even come with a red dot mounted. This pre-mounted red dot will be a RomeoZero micro-dot from SIG.

Combined with the proprietary rail, most options for the P365 are other SIG products. This is an attempt to provide a full service option for their pistols and to get a leg up on aftermarket parts suppliers.

Sig Sauer P365 Nitron Micro-Compact

Sig Sauer P365 Nitron Micro-Compact

The P365 Nitron Micro-Compact is designed to fill the role of a small frame-revolver with better capacity. This results in a comparatively small semi-automatic that has the ease of reloading with a magazine rather than a speed strip or speed loader. It also provides the ability to clear malfunctions should they occur.

The base P365 model is a great option for those who want a smaller handgun and don’t want a lot of modularity. If they eventually decide they need some modularity, SIG’s aftermarket lights might fulfill the role or aftermarket adapters for the proprietary rail can be purchased.

The base X-RAY3 sights allow you to use the iron sights in a variety of lighting conditions but still have their limitations due to environmental factors.

Sig Sauer P365 XL Spectre

Sig Sauer P365 XL Spectre

One of the larger models of the sub-compact P365 line, the XL Spectre is still a great choice in a concealed carry pistol. With a weight just shy of 21 ounces, it is heavy by comparison with other P365 versions but remains a lightweight pistol when looking at standard-sized sidearms.

Chambered for 9mm Luger ammunition, and featuring both a 10 and 12-round magazine in the four sub-versions of the XL, this is a great choice for firepower when you need it. The extra ounces will help with retaining a target while absorbing recoil better than lighter-weight models.

Sig Sauer P365 X Born and Raised

Sig Sauer P365 X Born and Raised

Embossed with the message “Born and Raised Outdoors” on the left side of the slide, this 9mm beauty won’t stop a charging grizzly bear, but then again, there are far more two-legged predators than four-legged predators on the trails and in the backwoods of American today.

The Born and Raised version of the P365 features all the reliability of the Sig Sauer line of pistols in an easy-to-carry format.

The Born and Raised carries easily in a backpack, hip, or shoulder holster and is a good companion in the backcountry or on a trail in more dangerous areas like a municipal city park where the two-legged predators are known to prowl.

Sig Sauer P365 XL Romeo Zero

Sig Sauer P365 XL Romeo Zero

The Romeo Zero comes in two varieties, with the only difference being the size of the magazine. One holds 10 and the other 12 rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition. While still a good choice for concealed carry, it’s not the best in the P365 line for women.

The high-profile Romeo Zero rear sight tends to snap when carried in a purse, or on a person with tighter-fitting clothing.

For men, with looser, bulkier clothing it’s not a problem, and the enhanced targeting available with the Romeo Zero sight more than compensates for any possible snagging that might occur as it is drawn from a concealed holster.

The pistol is much higher than the SAS making it a better choice for someone with larger hands that is still looking for a good concealed carry pistol.

Sig Sauer P365-380

Sig Sauer P365-380

For those who need less recoil, the P365-380 offers you a modern pistol design in a classic self-defense caliber. This version of the P365 is chambered in .380 ACP and has the same features and compatibility that the 9 mm P365 has.

You might ask as many interested buyers do, just what is the difference between a 9mm Luger and a .380 caliber bullet. The answer is power, the 9mm with a longer case can generate substantially more energy than it’s.380 rival.

To add a bit of confusion, the .380 is sometimes known as the 9mm Browning since it has the same diameter as the 9mm Luger. The rounds have similar histories as well with the Browning invented in the USA in 1908 by the legendary John Browning and the Luger six years earlier in Germany.

Ammunition for the .380 is higher priced than the more common 9mm Luger so the question is why choose the .380 version of the P365? The answer is recoil, it is substantially lower than the 9mm version of the pistol.

If you’re a smaller person, with small hands, and can’t handle the recoil of a 9mm effectively enough to remain on target when firing multiple shots, the .380 is a good choice for you. The .380 caliber remains a popular backup cartridge by military and police officers and is an excellent choice for women in a concealed carry format.

The .380 comes in two varieties, with one having a slightly wider grip at 1.1 inches.

P365-380 Specs:

Action: Semi-automatic, striker fired
Caliber: .380 ACP

Barrel length: 3.1 inches
Weight: 15.7 ounces
Overall Length: 5.8 inches

Sig Sauer P365-380 Romeo Zero Elite

Sig Sauer P365-380 Romeo Zero Elite

The P365-380 has all the features you’d expect in the larger 9mm Luger version of the Romeo Zero, with the lighter recoil of the .380 caliber cartridge.

The Romeo Zero sights are the draw of this .380. Used properly you’ll have the greatest accuracy at range possible with the lighter .380 caliber cartridge.

A very lightweight pistol weighing less than a pound is a good choice for women, but the raised rear Romeo Zero sight can present a snagging problem in a purse or in a tight, form-fitting holster.

Attribute Spec
Action: Semi-automatic, striker fired
Caliber: .380 ACP

This unique variation of the P365 embraces the concept of point shooting. The SAS features a specialty sight set into the frame to allow the normal sights to be removed for less of a snag hazard.

This version aims to improve on the pocket pistol design while providing a number of modern improvements on this old concept.
