Some shooters spend a small fortune in acquiring a custom rifle with exacting standards. Springfield Armory took that thought and put it into a production model, the 2020 Waypoint that rivals the best custom-made rifles you can find.

This is an extremely accurate shooting platform available in calibers from .22 Long Rifle to .300 Winchester Magnum. In between you’ll find the darlings of the distance shooting crowd with 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC and the venerable .308 Winchester. Smooth action, quality construction, and a consistent, comfortable trigger are all attributes of the 2020 Waypoint.

The only drawbacks you might find are the weight and the external magazine. The weight is great for bench shooting, target competitions, but weighing between seven to over eight pounds you might not want to pack it into the back country on extended hunts. Many people prefer internal magazines and the detachable style might be a concern for some. Ergonomically this is an easy rifle to shoot with easy to access controls.

About to celebrate its fifth birthday after a late season introduction in 2020, the Springfield 2020 Waypoint became an almost instant classic in the long-distance shooting world. Built to exacting standards, its features are impressive. Produced in a wide variety of calibers that include .300 PRC, 7mm PRC, .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 6mm, and .300 Win Mag they had long distance shooting in mind. They also offer the 2020 Waypoint in inexpensive .22 Long Rifle.

Beginning with a carbon fiber stock, Springfield’s proprietary TriggerTech trigger that is adjustable from 2.5 to 5-pounds and a fluted stainless-steel barrel. A variety of camouflage patterns including Ridgeline and Evergreen create a striking image. Included is a Picatinny rail and an optional adjustable cheek rest.

Springfield has included a detachable muzzle brake to reduce recoil. Perhaps most impressive is Springfield’s .75 MOA accuracy guarantee. If you’re an experience shooter, using factory ammunition and your 2020 Waypoint isn’t tack driving accurate, Springfield Armory will make sure it is.

  • .300 PRC – A 24-inch barrel, 7.5-pound weight and a 3-round magazine. At 46-inches it’s an ideal length, and with a tight 1:8.5-inch twist it is accurate and it packs excellent energy.
  • 7mm PRC – This cartridge is fast, accurate and a growing contender in both long-distance shooting and in varmint hunting. An excellent long-range round with manageable recoil.
  • .308 – The old favorite, accurate despite a shorter 20-inch barrel and 1:10-inch twist. Weighing an ample 7.7 pounds and in a shorter 41.5-inch length this version is at home on the bench or with big game.
  • 6.5 Creedmoor – The most popular varmint and distant cartridge on the market comes in heavy 7.9-pound package with a 22-inch barrel and an overall length of 43.5-inches. This is a popular caliber for the 2020 Waypoint.
  • 6.5 PRC – The prime contender to the 6.5 Creedmoor, the 6.5 PRC is heavy at 8.1 pounds, nearing the limit of how much you want to pack on a varmint hunt when you include a scope. A 24-inch barrel and 1:8-inch twist guarantee accuracy.
  • 6mm – Five-round magazine, 20-inch fluted barrel and weighing 7.9 pounds this caliber of the 2020 won’t produce much recoil.
  • .300 Win Mag – You’re talking power with a .300 Win Mag. This 2020 Waypoint weighs 8.12 pounds which offsets the ample recoil. With the muzzle brake attached it should be manageable for just about any shooter. A three-round magazine and 24-inch barrel.
  • .22 LR – A 10-round magazine, 38-inch length and 20-inch barrel makes the rimfire version of the 2020 Waypoint a joy to shoot. No recoil, none at all, thanks to the lighter power of the .22 Long Rifle combined with the 7.7-pound weight. This is a fun version.
