Remington 700 Bolt Action Rifles
(2)If you’re like most sportsman, you grew up dreaming of someday owning a Remington 700. This classic design entered the market in 1962, and it’s been one of the world’s most popular sporting rifles ever since. Available in a wide variety of calibers, Remington hasn’t simply mass produced these different chambered guns with just a tweak or two, but has designed each one to handle, cycle and chamber these varied rounds with precision engineering.
There are several versions of the 700, including the ADL, BDL, CDL, Safari Model and 700 SPS. No matter the model, they’re all accurate, reliable and durable. The days of the shiny walnut stock are still around in a few models, but most are now more durable synthetic.
Originally intended as a sporting rifle, the Model 700 quickly found its way into inner city SWAT arsenals and was adapted by the military into their M24 and M40 sniper rifles. Remington planned on producing a low-cost, highly effective rifle, and they accomplished that. Over the last six decades sales have flown and it is now considered the most widely used bolt-action rifle in the United States.
Available in 20, 22, 24 and 26-inch barrels and tipping the scales at almost nine pounds, this is a substantial rifle. The extra weight might be noticed on long, mountain hikes, but that extra weight translates into lower recoil in heavier cartridges as well.
A three-piece, forged steel bolt, with the ejector a C clip sitting inside the bolt face, this is an incredibly reliable action. The 700 is renowned for reliability and few jams. The internal magazine can vary in capacity from three to five rounds depending on the size of the cartridge and larger external magazines are available in some versions.
A complaint many hunters have is the hinged floor plate in many models. While it is quicker for unloading, it can be a pain if your hands are cold or wet and the cartridges slip and fall to the ground. That’s about the only complaint anyone has ever had about the Remington 700. That’s the reason there have been over 5,000,000 sold.
- 700 ADL – The flagship, a 1:9.13 twist guarantees accuracy. An ideal hunting weight of 7 ¼ pounds, a blued finish, four-round magazine and a length a little under 47-inches creates the perfect hunting rifle.
- 700 SPS – The next generation of the venerable 700 Remington. A 1:10 twist, drilled and tapped for a scope base and a synthetic, all-weather stock. In .30-06 this is the most popular 700 on the market currently, and at a reasonable price.
- 700 SPS Tactical -A 22-inch heavy barrel, Supercell recoil pad and X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger make the SPS Tactical a favorite for both military and law enforcement snipers. This is a long-range, hard-hitting rifle with incredible accuracy.
- 700 Alpha – The premier version of the 700. It’s higher on the price scale but comes with so many options you won’t notice the sticker. One-piece spiral fluted bolt, an enlarged ejection port, an easy access firing pin assembly, and a composite, carbon-fiber stock are just a few of the amenities.
- 700 CDL – Many long-range shooters claim the 700 CDL is the most accurate rifle on the market directly out of the box. An attractive American walnut stock, set against a satin blued barrel creates a classic image. At 7.5-pounds, and 44.5 inch overall length you won’t find a more accurate rifle in this price range.
