You’ll have to search heavily to find a rifle offered in as many calibers as the Mossberg Patriot. From the fast, lightweight .22-250 to the power of the Ruger 375, the Patriot is available chambered for 14 different calibers. That’s a lot of versatility, but versatile, combined with utility is one of the hallmarks of Mossberg firearms.
The Patriot is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. The rifle was introduced by Mossberg as a low-cost hunting rifle, but soon found use in the tactical world as a sniper platform. Accurate, inexpensive, reliable and durable, this bolt-action rifle has quickly gained popularity with hunters and mid-distance shooters.
The Mossberg Patriot features three, four and five round magazine capacities depending on the caliber. All arrive with a scope ready Picatinny Rail attached above the walnut or synthetic stock. This rifle can take coyotes at 600-yards, or a bison at equal distance depending on the caliber.
If you’re looking for intricately carved stock and ornate design, look elsewhere. The Patriot is a no-nonsense, accurate rifle with all the required features and none of the fluff. It has a standard plunger ejector and heavy locking lugs. A two-position safety, combined with an easily worked bolt handle makes this a simple rifle to cycle and shoot.
There is a flair of design in the spiral turned bolt that gives it just a little flair. The design is eye catching but has a purpose in keeping it debris free in dirty or wet hunting environments. A fluted barrel speeds up cooling after multiple shots. Combined with the walnut or synthetic stock it makes an attractive combination. An adjustable trigger adds to the adaptability.
The final touches are a thick, level comb, a raised cheekpiece and a recoil pad. This is a necessity in .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag or .375 Ruger. All in all, a great rifle, especially at the price.
Every rifle platform is nearly identical, the only major differences being magazine capacity due to the different caliber dimensions and barrel length. Heavier calibers weigh a bit more than the lighter ones.
