The Barrett MRAD bolt action rifle at a glance
War movies featuring long-distance shooting snipers have become popular. It’s tied into long-distance target shooting as one of the more popular shooting sports. The venerable .308 caliber was the long-distance round for both military and SWAT teams for decades, but Barrett has improved the options on the market with their MRAD bolt-action series.
Barrett MRAD is a series of modular bolt action rifles with 10-round magazines. The fluted barrels are changeable with one tool, chambered in 338 Lapau Magnum, 338 Norma Magnum, 300 Win Mag, 308 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 300 Norma, and 300 PRC. It has a folding stock with an adjustable length pull butt coupled with a fully adjustable cheek rest. The 7000 series aluminum receiver has an integral rail. The trigger group is fully removable, and the two-position safety selector switch is set at a 45-degree angle.
Any reliable long-distance rifle has to be fired from a stable platform. With traditional sporting rifles, a shooting sled, bench or carefully arranged sandbags can provide the platform. An NRAD is its own stable shooting platform with a well-balanced heavy rifle. The heft also reduces recoil, eliminating or reducing “shooter’s flinch” and allows for accurate 1,000 meter plus accuracy.
While the .308 was once the standard, it has serious competition with 6.5 Creedmoor, .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, .338 Lapua and recently introduced .300 PRC cartridges. The MRAD is available in all of these calibers with 35 different arrangements. With a suppressor, you can reach long-distance targets with minimal recoil and enjoy a long afternoon of clanging steel targets at extreme distances.
