Mossberg 464 Lever Action Rifle

Mossberg 464 Lever Action Rifle

It, along with the horse, and war bonnets highlighted on the horizon are the iconic images of the American West. The lever action rifle fell out of favor with the military as the 20th century dawned, but it remains one of the most popular firearms ever produced in America.

The Mossberg 465 carries on that tradition with a pair of interesting lever-action models, one in traditional .30-30 centerfire and the other in less powerful, less expensive .22 long rifle. Both models are among the most popular in the field of lever-action shooting.

Mossberg is a company renowned for shotguns, the quality, reliability, and affordability of their 12 and 20-gauge offerings are tremendous. They’ve extended that tradition to the lever-action world with the Model 464 with mixed reviews. Mossberg fans love the walnut stock, the blued finish, and the ease of loading the 464. Critics claim the 464 has a tendency to jam when ejecting cartridges, especially the .30-30 version.

The basic configuration with the blued steel finish and the walnut stock creates a classic “Western” rifle, but Mossberg added a tactical component with a six-position adjustable synthetic stock, and the ability to adjust the length of pull up to four inches. If you’re taller or shorter, this is a tremendous feature, allowing you to cycle the lever-action system in a manner suited to the length of your arm.

Mossberg 464 .30-30 Lever-action Rifle

The .30-30 cartridge is perhaps the most maligned big game caliber among all the choices available for American hunters. It doesn’t have the range, energy, or accuracy of many of the calibers that descended from it such as the .270 and .30-06, but the .30-30 remains the cartridge of choice for lever-action enthusiasts. The reason is the size of the shell, which with its shorter length lends itself to lever-action mechanisms. The shell loads and ejects easily with just a pump of the lever, that’s what it was one of the original calibers chosen when lever-action rifles made the switch from black powder to smokeless powder in the late 19th century.

The Model 464 carries on the tradition of lever-action rifles that began in the post-Civil War period with Henry, Spencer, and Winchester rifles in various calibers.

This is not a high-end, collector’s item lever-action rifle, but it is affordable, gets the job done, and is available in four configurations from Mossberg. The walnut finish, blued steel barrel, and the fun of a lever-action style rifle, mixed with maybe a bit of nostalgia from old western movies make this an interesting choice for a rifle.
