H&K MR762A1 Semi-Auto Rifle

H&K MR762A1 Semi-Auto Rifle

Whether you drive a 73’ Pontiac with a peeling velour roof or an S-Class Mercedes Benz you’re likely to get to your destination in about the same amount of time. The destination isn’t the difference, the traveling is. The automobile analogy is a good one since an H&K MR762A1 costs almost the same as a used compact car.

Heckler and Koch have produced arguably the finest military assault rifle in the world in the HK 417, and that quality extends to its civilian version of the vaunted combat rifle, the MR762A1. Chambered in 7.62 x 51mm NATO, the sport version is offered in the United States in compatible .308 Winchester caliber by most retailers.

The MR762A1 is a marvel of German engineering, another tie to the Mercedes comparison.Manufactured to incredibly small tolerances, and built of only the highest quality steel, the rifle. The biggest difference between the MR762A1 is found in the operating system. The MR utilizes a short-stroke gas piston system, this is different than the direct impingement system found in most AR-style rifles.

The gas piston system keeps the weapon cleaner than other methods by venting the exhaust gas through the forearm of the rifle, rather than the receiver.

Shooters willing to pay a price tag that begins north of $3,500 and reaches almost $7000 for an AR note that their MR is incredibly reliable and never jams, even when firing a lot of rounds through it without cleaning.

Easy disassembly and reassembly using a proprietary tool located in the stock of the rifle is another popular feature, as is a five-position stock, with adjustable cheek pads that create a fully adaptable firing platform that will accommodate any size shooter.

This isn’t a rifle you’ll want to take on long treks into the wilderness, it is much heavier than rival AR designs, and heavier than most large caliber hunting rifles as well. Tipping the scales over 10 pounds empty, this is a heavy rifle.

Fans of the MR don’t mind the weight, since that extra steel translates into a very accurate shooting platform. ARs aren’t renowned for distance shooting, but the MR is an effective, accurate weapon to distances of 600-yards, remarkable ballistics for an AR.

Two versions of the MR are available with differences in sights, magazines, and finish. The core mechanism of the rifle is the same in each version but the price tag is almost double between the basic model and the completely tricked-out version.

HK-MR762A1-RPLCA1-Semi-Auto-Rifle

This version retails for almost $7000, but on the plus side, it’s ready out of the box with the highest quality components you can imagine. It features HKs proprietary 20-round magazine set in a 10.4-pound rifle. Add the weight of 20-rounds of .308 ammunition and when fully loaded you have a 12-pound AR to pack into the field or take to the range.

The adjustable stock delivers an overall length of between 35.9 and 39.1 inches, on the upper limit of most AR competing lengths.

A flat Dark Earth finish diminishes glare, and visibility without the need for a camouflage pattern that many shooters think deters from a rifle's appearance.

This model comes without a scope, using flip-up front and rear sights on an optical rail that could easily accommodate a scope if you chose to add one. Slightly lighter without an included scope at 9.8 pounds, it also has a smaller magazine, holding just 10-rounds.

It has the same adjustable buttstock but is made in more traditional black polymer.
