Monofilament has been the “go to” line for a long time. The inexpensive cost of monofilament and the wide variety of colors and sizes it is available in lends itself to almost every fishing application.
The best use of monofilament is in trout fishing where size and color of line can match the color of the water and the size of the fish. Ultralight rigs using smaller two to four-pound test line can provide a lot of action with small brook trout and smaller rainbows and cutthroats.
Larger monofilament in the 20 to 30-pound test range works well with spinning reels after river salmon and is a great choice for saltwater species either from a boat or in surf casting.
Many anglers wind a dozen yards or so of monofilament on baitcasting reels before tying it to braided line. It has better grip than braid and winds a tighter spool.
