The Savage Axis bolt-action rifle in .223 Remington is the best-selling entry-level rifle to ever hit the American market. It’s rugged, durable, and comes in a variety of configurations, but most importantly, it’s accurate. Savage is a premier rifle manufacturer, founded in Utica, New York in 1894. Their early reputation was for lever-action rifles, but they’ve taken over the bolt-action realm with the Axis and now the Axis II.

Savage offers their proprietary “Accutrigger” which is considered by many marksmen and hunters the best trigger design on the market. Initial reviews of the Axis, when it was first marketed in 2010, listed a “clunky” action with the bolt as a problem, but that has been corrected and there are now more than 800,000 Axis rifles rolling across the meadows, hills, and mountains of the USA.

Savage produces over a dozen bolt-action models in .223 Remington, with more in development. The accuracy of the Savage barrel is the major selling point, but the variety of stocks, length of pull, and overall design make their rifles the go-to choice for many. Add to that one of the lowest prices on the market for an accurate rifle in the Axis and you have a favorite for both novice and experienced shooters.
