What Is A .308 Rifle?
A .308 rifle is a rifle that is made to fire the .308 Winchester cartridge. This can be a bolt action rifle, semi-automatic rifle (such as a modern sporting rifle), or a break barrel rifle. When you generally refer to a rifle as a “.308 rifle”, it is not descriptive in who manufactures the rifle, the design of the rifle, or any other rifle characteristics, except the fact that the rifle is chambered in .308 Winchester.
When the .308 Winchester came out, it was considered to be the “snipers round” due to its impressive ballistics and the fact that it was fairly flat shooting. This made the round wildly popular, and nowadays it is considered by many to be the standard round for hunting big game in North America. While some newer cartridges outperform the .308, its popularity, rock solid performance, and established place in the manufacturing world ensure that this cartridge will be around for a very long time.
What Is A .308 Winchester Rifle Used For?
The most popular use case for a .308 Winchester rifle is hunting big game. The most common game the .308 is used for is whitetail deer. The .308 Winchester delivers a large amount of power to its target, and has a proven track record of efficiently harvesting deer sized game. Combine that with its very manageable amount of recoil, and it is easy to see how this is the go-to cartridge for a large portion of hunters.
The .308 can also be used for self defense. With self defense in mind, shooters will choose an AR-10 style rifle. These semi-automatic rifles are much more effective tools for self defense than any other style of rifle, and every large firearms manufacturer has their own variation. Lastly, the .308 is great for the range. The .308 has competed in plenty of 1000 yard competitions, and has done exceptionally well. You can get a modern precision rifle built for the range, and when you pair it with a .308 Winchester, you get a quality tool that is competition ready, but also a lot of fun to shoot on the weekends.
