A threaded barrel is a great addition for rifles with heavy recoil. They can reduce the force driving into your shoulder, increasing accuracy by reducing recoil that may subconsciously affect shooting. That isn’t a problem for anyone with a .17 HMR. The reason for a threaded barrel on a .17 boils down to flash suppression and reduced noise.

A standard .17 HMR isn’t the mountain rocking noise maker you find in .30-06, but it does make a short, sharp sound on each shot. If you’re in a prairie dog town with the job of reducing the number of these destructive rodents, a threaded barrel, with a noise and flash suppressor in place can provide more targets while remaining in the same spot.
