Taurus TH9

Taurus TH9 Pistol

To many gun buyers, inexpensive is a synonym for cheap, but that’s not the case with the Taurus TH9 full-sized pistol. Taurus is a growing player in the world of semi-automatic, 9mm, and .40 caliber handguns, and their introductory level pricing on the TH9 is enticing to first-time buyers, or those who are on a limited budget, but still trying to purchase a reliable pistol.

The TH9 features a Novak Drift Adjustable sight, a 17-round magazine in 9mm style, and a 15-round magazine when chambered with the slightly larger .40 caliber Smith and Wesson.

An ambidextrous safety makes it easier and safer to use for left-handed shooters, and a substantial weight of 28.2 ounces reduces recoil in the 9mm version.

This is a full-size, hammer-ignited pistol full of safety features, but still capable of delivering quick shots when a situation demands it.

The one drawback of the TH9 is accuracy. Many shooters don’t like the trigger system, finding it a bit loose, and creating subsequent targeting problems. Hitting a tight pattern on paper targets at ranges beyond 30 yards is described as challenging by many users.

But, for the introductory price of less than $300, this is a pistol worth looking at.

Taurus TH9 Full Sized .40 caliber Semi-Automatic Pistol

You might have heard this confusing statement a time or two, “It’s the same, only different.”

Well, that’s the case with the .40 caliber version of the Taurus TH9. The physical aspects of the TH9 in either 9mm Luger or .40 caliber Smith and Wesson are nearly identical aside from a slightly wider magazine that holds two fewer cartridges in the .40 caliber version, and a slightly larger bore to accommodate the wider .40 caliber cartridges. The internal mechanism is marginally different as well to handle the two unique cartridges.

What is the same is the height, weight, width, length, and barrel length in the .40 caliber and the 9mm offerings.

It’s a matter of personal preference, but some shooters like the extra energy generated by a .40 caliber handgun over that of a 9mm. With a weight of 28.2 ounces, recoil is not likely to create an issue with either cartridge, so firing the .40 caliber amounts to just putting a bit more lead, with a few dozen extra pounds of energy on a target.
