Savage A17 Semi-Auto Rifle
The Savage A17 is a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .17 HMR. It uses a delayed-blowback system built from the ground up to be compatible with all current loadings for .17 HMR. A special lug in the system holds the chamber shut long enough for the pressures to reach safe levels before ejecting the spent case and chambering the next round.
The Savage A17 leans more towards precision shooting and small game hunting/pest control because of the .17 HMR chambering. This round is essentially a necked-down .22 Magnum designed for a flatter trajectory. This means a more direct flight path from barrel to target.
Since it is using a rimfire cartridge, the Savage A17 is a close-in rifle. While some loads can reach out to 150 yards, this is the maximum effective reach for the round. If you intend to use it on something as large as a coyote, you’ll need to be much closer to it than you would need to be for a prairie dog or a squirrel.
The Savage A17 offers a number of benefits for pest control. It comes pre-drilled and tapped to accept a scope, has a 10 round capacity, and is semi-automatic to aid in taking down multiple small game where there can be little error in shot placement.
While not as modular as other designs, the Savage A17 does allow you to modify the trigger without going to a gunsmith. This allows you to get the trigger pull you want without the extra cost of a professional trigger job which helps with the precision aspect of the rifle.
The charging handle is oversized for ease of use, and the rifle comes in either a wood laminate or a synthetic stock. This helps ensure the rifle is not as affected by changes in temperature. The wood laminate stock also has a thumb through stock option which is not available on the synthetic models.
