Colt Mustang Pistol
They call it a “pocket pistol” for obvious reasons, it’s so small it will fit easily in most men’s pockets. The Colt Mustang is about as small as a semi-automatic pistol can be made and still retain all the functionality and performance Colt firearms are known to possess.
Introduced initially in 1983 it was produced for the next 13 years before production was halted in 1996. The Mustang reappeared 15 years later and has been in full production by Colt since 2011.
In appearance, it looks like the little brother of the popular 1911 .45 ACP platform, but the design and action is different. With a height of less than four inches and a length of six, you’d never mistake it for a full-sized 1911.
The draw to this smaller pistol is the surprisingly high performance you can expect from a .380 caliber handgun that weighs just 12 ounces. In essence, you’re packing a six-round magazine, with a quick trigger in a package similar in weight to a can of soda.
The polymer construction with either black, stainless steel, or a combination of both is offered in four designs that are identical in function, dimensions, and magazine capacity with just the color scheme separating them.
Colt selected the popular .380 caliber cartridge since it doesn’t produce the recoil of a .45 or .45 caliber round and is much less intense than any magnum.
Recoil is still an issue for smaller shooters since the 12-ounce weight and small footprint of the pistol delivers a lot of blowback force for a .380 cartridge.
