Bergara B14 Hunter

Bergara B14

Offered in a dozen varieties of finish and chambered in seven of the most popular big game hunting calibers, the B14 Hunter is a high-quality, durable, accurate rifle suitable for adventures in climates from blazing heat to sub-zero cold. The B14 is a moderate weight, average length rifle that offers many different twist ratios in their barrel design, fitted exclusively to the caliber of ammunition used.

A rapidly rising player in the international bolt-action, hunting rifle market, Bergara utilizes high-quality barrels as the starting point of their rifle design, then continues with the rest of their rifle components with generating the highest quality hunting rifles on the market as a goal.

Though Bergara is located in Bergara, Spain, the influence of the United States Marine Corp is found in every rifle.

Bergara began producing a limited run of custom rifles designed by a former production chief and instructor for the Marine Corps Precision Weapons Section. Bergara brought other members of that high-level group and now these former American Marines form the core of the Bergara production team.

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 Inch 6.5 Creedmoor

Bergara B14 6.5 Creedmoor

The 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge is a caliber that is gaining rapidly in popularity. Its versatility as a varmint round with long-range capabilities combined with the energy to be effective at long range with deer and antelope has created quite a stir across the hunting world.

Bergara designed a version of their B14 Hunter to meet this growing enthusiasm with a rifle that is accurate to great distances starting with the twist rate of their high-end barrels.

The 6.5 Creedmoor model has a 1:8 twist rate, spinning the high-speed 6.5 cartridge in very accurate revolutions that keep it on target to distances of 800-yards. With the ability to use the popular Remington 700 model scope rings and bases, it's easy to attach a high-quality scope for even greater accuracy.

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 Inch 7mm Magnum

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 inch 7mm Magnum

The engineering and design teams at Bergara noted the popularity of the 7mm Magnum, a round that is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The power of the 7mm Magnum exceeds the venerable .30-06 making it a great choice for deer, moose, and elk hunting and a viable caliber for just about any North American game.

Bergara designed their tapped barrel with a 1:9 twist, a ratio that handles the most popular 7mm Magnum cartridge, the 160 grain, well and enhances accuracy over distance.

The rifle weight of 7.3 pounds is ample enough to handle the magnum recoil for most hunters.

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 Inch .300 Winchester Magnum

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 Inch .300 Winchester Magnum

Most of the other specifications on the .300 Win mag are identical to the 24-inch versions of the B14 in lighter calibers except one. When a .300 Winchester Magnum bullet exits the muzzle of a B14, it has already spun 2.4 revolutions before leaving the barrel.

This 1:10 spin is ideal for the .300 Winchester Magnum and takes care of some of the accuracy issues found in rival magnums that offer spin ratios of 1:16 or higher.

Proponents of the .300 Winchester Magnum cartridge argue over the relative merits of 180 versus 200-grain bullets. The weight won’t matter with a B14 and its fast rotation, you’ll be accurate, with a lot of energy a long way with the B14 Hunter.

Bergara B14 Hunter 22 Inch .308

Bergara B14 Hunter 22 Inch .308

The .308 cartridge, aka the 7.62x51 NATO, is a shorter cartridge designed originally for full automatic combat assault rifles, but the energy and range of this more compact round made it popular with hunters as well.

You’ll find .308 rifles often have shorter barrels and this is the case with the B14 Hunter when chambered for .308 caliber use. The barrel is just 22 inches long, a full two inches shorter than other models, and as a result, the weight is the lightest of all the B14 Hunter versions at just 7.05 pounds. A more compact 41.5-inch overall length is noticeable as well.

If you can’t handle recoil well, you might need to look at another cartridge if you’re set on purchasing a B14 Hunter. The lighter weight, with the well known recoil of the .308, might induce a little “shooter’s flinch” if you aren’t able to take the shock this rifle can generate.

Bergara B14 Hunter 22 Inch .243

Bergara B14 Hunter 22 Inch .243

The other calibers offered in the B14 Hunter are for big game with high energy capability. The .243 is a legal deer cartridge, but most people prefer to use it for varmint hunting. The B14 in .243 caliber is an excellent coyote gun, that “barks over here, but bites way out there” as the old timers say.

The .243 version of the B14 Hunter is the lightest offering of the rifle at just 7 pounds, but the 22-inch barrel with the 1:10 twist delivers accurate shots up to 600 yards. The recoil is marginal with a .243 so the lighter weight won’t matter when you’re shooting, but it will make a difference when you’re packing it on your back across the sagebrush or in hilly broken country.

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 Inch .30-06

Bergara B14 Hunter 24 Inch .30-06

The venerable .30-06, the loudest gun in the forest is our final review. The B14 Hunter version in .30-06 caliber is surprisingly light at just seven pounds. Expect some recoil from this popular form of hunting heavy artillery.

The .30-06 has undoubtedly taken more elk and moose than any other cartridge, and with a twist ratio of 1:10, the engineers at Bergara have taken into consideration how the ballistics of the .30-06 function the best in their high-quality barrels.

With a 24-inch barrel, and tapped for Remington style rings and mounts, this is a great choice in a higher energy, low weight big game rifle.
