The Beretta M9A4 brought the M9 series fully up to modern standards, integrating the advances in technology and tactics that have occurred since the early 2000s.

Released in 2021, the M9A4 is the first of the M9 series to feature the ability to mount red dot sights from the factory. The slide is precut to accept one of five difference mounting plates for the appropriate red dot footprint.

Additional improvements of the design would make the gun a better off-the-shelf pistol on par with other brands.

The M9A4 does a good job of integrating popular aftermarket modifications from other brands into the M9 design.

The sights have been upgraded to a dovetail design that makes swapping them easier and more in line with other modern pistols. Additionally the base sights are now tritium 3-dot night sights. This addition combined with the use of red dot sights makes the gun easier to aim in a variety of lighting conditions.

The M9A4 also features a short reset Xtreme Trigger. This allows for faster shots and overall better performance than the M9A3’s stock trigger.

The Vertec frame allows for a thinner grip designed to make the gun more “pointable” which makes aiming the gun easier. The new grip design is also compatible with a wider variety of hand sizes.

The M9A4 also sports the universal slide that allows it to be a decocker-only G model and the three slot Picatinny rail system found on the M9A3. The threaded barrel also comes over from the M9A3, allowing for the use of various muzzle devices without having to swap out the factory barrel.

M9A4 Specs

The M9A4 finally caused the M9 series to meet the standards of the modern handgun market.

The overall modularity and features puts it in line with Glock, FN Herstal, and Smith & Wesson. This still does not change that the gun itself is a heavy full-sized pistol, but it does allow you to have the versatility that has become standard on other pistols.

The ability to mount a red dot reflects the widespread desire and benefits that these optics provide. This feature alone drastically improves the ability of the M9 series.

While it is still a Double Action/Single Action gun, it provides a more modern option for concealed carry if you prefer to use the M9 series in this role. If you do choose to use it as your everyday-carry you won’t be sacrificing functionality for a classic design like you would with an M9/M9A1 style pistol.

At its price point, there are more affordable options to choose from with the same functionality, but there are other options that are worse as well.

Variants

M9A4 Centurion

The M9A4 Centurion is the major variant of the M9A4. Like most Centurion designations, this version of the pistol features a shorter slide length to produce a more compact gun.

While this length reduction is only a few fractions of an inch, the gun itself becomes over an ounce lighter than the full-sized version.

This makes the gun slightly less heavy to carry, but it still matches the weight of a loaded G17. If you don’t prefer the longer slide and want a slightly more compact M9A4, this is the option to go with.
