When selecting a rod for ice fishing, you need to have a strong sense of your priorities. Are you hoping to come home with one large trophy fish, or several smaller fish? Do you want to camp in your shelter at one hole, or travel around to check on a smattering of ice holes? Shorter rods are better for camping in shelters, while long rods do well in the open as they have highly sensitive tips for jigging. You'll want a lightweight rod for smaller fish, a medium action rod for medium fish, and a medium heavy rod for your larger fish. Medium action rods are also a great choice for beginners.
